General Information
General information about our program:
- History: It is a Higher Education program that trains technical personnel who, as a member of a fire department, take precautions against fires, perform fire extinguishing and rescue operations, and perform search, rescue and first aid interventions in cases of natural disasters other than fires. The Civil Defense and Firefighting Department was opened at the Executive Board Meeting of YÖK on 27/12/2017, and it was planned to enroll students in Iğdır Vocational School in 2018, but it did not happen, and students were enrolled in the 2019-2020 academic year.
- Department Program Outcomes:
1. 1. Knows the legal regulations regarding firefighting, fire and rescue incidents.
2. Learn about the materials used to extinguish fires.
3. Learn about chemical, biological and nuclear hazards and precautions
4. By using the basic knowledge and skills acquired in the field, the student will have the ability to interpret and evaluate data, define and analyze problems, and develop evidence-based solutions.
5. The ability to work effectively individually, in groups and in multi-disciplinary teams, and has the self-confidence to take responsibility.
6. They can learn the principles of basic laws and regulations of Civil Defense and Firefighting and use them to solve problems they may encounter.
7. To have knowledge about hazardous chemical substances in Civil Defense and Firefighting, to be able to use the necessary detection devices and to respond to fires caused by these substances with the appropriate extinguisher.
8. Applies techniques for using rescue tools and methods against disasters.
9. Conducts fire prevention and inspection activities.
10. Has a sense of professional and ethical responsibility.
11. Follows occupational safety laws and regulations and communication technologies.
12. Have the awareness of lifelong learning.
13. Has physical competence in firefighting and the ability to operate active and passive measures used in fire prevention.
14. Conducts post-fire investigation and fire report preparation.
- Language/Type of Instruction: The program's language of instruction and type of instruction (e.g., formal education, distance education, evening education). Also, whether the program is for international students or offers bilingual education.
- Infrastructure Opportunities: They are employed as Search and Rescue Technicians in Municipal Fire Departments and Emergency Directorates, Search and Rescue Technicians in Civil Defense Search and Rescue Unit Directorates, Fire Safety Staff in Hotels and Public Institutions, Fire Technicians in Airports and Ports, Technical Staff in Fire Department and Fire Safety related device sales and material production companies, Fire Safety Staff in Organized Industry and Industrial Organizations, Occupational Safety and Occupational Health Technicians.

Double Major / Minor Programs
Double Major Program: It allows students to earn a bachelor's degree in a department they are interested in, in addition to their main department. In this program, students can complete courses in two different departments and earn a diploma in both fields.
Minor Program: Allows students to take a certain number of courses in a field they are interested in, outside of their main department. Students who complete the minor program are given an official certificate in that field; however, this does not mean a second undergraduate degree.

Exchange Programs

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM
The general purpose of the program is to train technical personnel who can learn the principles of basic laws and regulations of Civil Defense and Firefighting in public institutions, organizations and private sectors and solve the problems they will encounter, have knowledge about hazardous chemical substances in civil defense and firefighting, be able to use the necessary detection devices and respond to fires caused by these substances with the appropriate extinguisher, have the ability to work effectively individually, in groups and in multi-disciplinary teams, have the self-confidence to take responsibility, be able to access information and conduct resource research for this purpose, be able to use databases and other information sources, have professional and ethical responsibility awareness, have physical competence in firefighting and be able to operate active and passive measures used in fire prevention, and be able to apply their knowledge and skills in the field of civil defense and firefighting.
Current Status and Future of the Department / Program:
The current state of civil defense and firefighting programs is evolving as the needs for emergency management and fire safety increase in many countries. Here are some key points about the state and future of these programs:
The current situation
- Training and Certification: Many universities and vocational schools offer training programs in civil defense and firefighting. These programs aim to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
- Technological Developments: New technologies in firefighting and emergency management, drone use, smart sensors and data analytics are developing in areas such as these. These technologies accelerate the fire prevention and intervention processes.
- Workforce Needs: The need for qualified personnel in the field of civil defense and firefighting continues. The demand for specialized personnel is increasing, especially in large cities and industrial areas.

- Expansion of Scope: The scope of civil defense and firefighting programs is expanding to include not only firefighting but also natural disasters, terrorist attacks and other emergencies.

- Sustainability: In the future, it will be important to develop sustainable practices that take environmental factors into account. Fire safety strategies will be integrated with the preservation of the ecological balance.
- Public Awareness: Raising public awareness about emergencies will be an important part of civil defense and firefighting programs. Public knowledge on this issue will be increased through training and drills.
As a result, civil defense and firefighting programs will continue to develop dynamically and offer new opportunities in various fields. There is an expanding market and different specialization opportunities for those considering a career in this field.
